Is Doula Certification Important? (Part #2)

Tricare recently announced doulas would be part of their insurance plan. The catch….you will need to pick a doula with 1 of 5 certain certifications…one of those being DONA International.

Recently, we have seen hospitals also be selective about the certifications doulas have to access their facilities to support their patients.

It seems that doula certifications require continuing education and renewal every few years are seen as worthy doula certifications in many of the hospitals and insurance carries eyes. As a nurse, I believe that the doula profession is just like any other when technology and lives are involved…continuing education is a MUST! As doulas, we must be accountable to maintain evidence based knowledge to best support our clients.
